STM to stop accepting cash at metro booths starting 2022

Starting February 7th, cash will no longer be accepted by agents when purchasing tickets for transport services.

In a news release, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) said that only debit and credit will be accepted at their metro booths, and the automated ticket vending machines will soon follow suit.

Retail stores listed as authorized ticket sellers continue to accept cash payments for fares during this transition time.

This decision comes after a 2020 survey done by the STM found that the majority of transit riders prefer contactless forms of payment.

STM says that agents and managers will be more present at stations to aid customers with fare purchases.
