Since February of this year, preparatory work has been ongoing on the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge in order to begin the construction of the new bridge at the end of this summer. There are currently two open lanes on each side of the bridge, which leads to more traffic for off-island residents who want to go on and off the island. Circulation is also limited to two lanes in Kirkland and Baie-d’Urfé between Morgan Boulevard and Saint-Charles Boulevard. The A-20 at the Taschereau (Vaudreuil-Dorion) and Galipeault (L'Île-Perrot) Bridges are going to be a high-traffic area for off-island residents. Here is a detailed summary of the traffic hell on the A-40 and A-20 for those areas:

A-40: Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge
Limited to two lanes Eastbound and Westbound, the bridge is a traffic nightmare for off-island residents. The 80 km/h speed limit also does not contribute to fluid circulation. According to Québec 511, this situation is supposed to last until August 31st. But, do not be surprised if more traffic is observed on this bridge or if the situation changes for the worse since the construction project will start this summer and end in 2030, as stated by the Ministry of Transportation and Sustainable Mobility.

A-40 Eastbound: Closure Between Morgan Boulevard and St-Charles Boulevard
With two lanes towards the West, this area of the A-40 between Kirkland and Baie-d’Urfé causes further congestion on the island for off-island residents. Exits 49 (towards Sainte-Marie) and 50 (towards St-Charles Boulevard) are now closed due to the ongoing construction and reparations in the area. A detour is possible at Exit 44 (Morgan Boulevard).

Consequently, the off-island residents who want to avoid the traffic of the A-40 are likely to take the A-20 instead. This is causing heavier traffic on both sides of the Taschereau (Vaudreuil-Dorion) and Galipeault (L’Île-Perrot) for residents who want to travel on and off-island.
