According to Quebec Premier, François Legault, there has been significant increases in cases in some regions, but so far not a big increase in hospitalizations. Although, he anticipates that there could be in the near future. He holds steady that the COVID-19 situation is under control, but will not hesitate to impose measures quickly, if that changes.
During his 5 p.m. press conference on April 6, 2021, he stated that 18% of Quebecers have been vaccinated.
Montreal does not have a significant increase in cases, but when looking at other regions he expects that we currently have a few weeks grace period. There is still a risk.
Today's preventative measures include an increase in restrictions for red and orange zones. Schools, sports, and religious gatherings were at the top of the list of sectors needing adjusting, as per the Health Minister.
Red zones, including Montreal, will return to one day on, one day off for secondary 3, 4, and 5 high school students beginning next Monday. There will be no after-school activities permitted.
"We prefer to adjust to the needs of the health crisis rather than stick to something that is too risky," Legault stated.
Gyms will be closed as of Thursday, April 8, 2021.
Religious gatherings will be limited to 25 people.
Legault continues to encourage people to avoid gatherings at home. It is still not permitted to visit family members.
Police gave out 3 times more tickets after the change in curfew to gatherings at home. While Legault's team discussed resuming the curfew to 8 pm, but chose to wait in hopes that this drastic measure need not be imposed.
The AstraZeneca vaccine will be made available to those 55 years and over.
