Reportedly, a rabid dog was imported from Iran on July 1st, 2021.

Soon after, the dog began to display clinical symptoms on July 11th and was later euthanized on July 12th, 2021.

The diagnosis was confirmed on July 15.

Results from virus characterization with discriminatory monoclonal antibody typing testing and genetic sequencing confirmed that the dog had been infected with a canine variant of the rabies virus which had been previously reported in Iran and Iraq.

A follow-up investigation revealed that 24 people had been exposed to the rabid dog and 14 were given post-exposure prophylaxis.

The rabid dog did not come into contact with any wild or domestic animals.

Dog-mediated rabies has not been reported in Canada since the 1960s.
