The Island of Montréal, including all West Island municipalities and towns, as well as the Vaudreuil-Soulanges area (Hudson, L’Île-Perrot, Pincourt, Saint-Lazare, Vaudreuil-Dorion, Rigaud) have been included in the ban on open fires in or near forests. The ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts in collaboration with the Société de protection des forêts contre le feu (SOPFEU) announced this ban, which came into effect May 30, 2023, at 6 p.m.
Due to the current weather conditions, the decision was made to add more sectors to the banned perimeter, such as Montréal, Laval, Centre-du-Québec, Montérégie, and Estrie. There are currently nine active fires in Quebec. Since the start of the protection season, a total of 194 forest fires have occurred, affecting an area of 317.9 hectares. It is worth noting that the average number of fires during the same period over the past ten years is 188, with an average affected area of 185.3 hectares.
