It's that time of year again. The time of year where you're getting invited to costume parties left, right, and center and you've worn the same old witch or scarecrow costume for the last seven years in a row. I'm here to tell you that a funny, creative, witty, or scary costume is not off the table for you this year, and you won't even have to break the bank. Some of these ideas ask you to let your creative juices flow, but after all, the do-it-yourself costumes always win the costume contests.
I put together five quick and easy costume ideas that you can prepare the night before your next Halloween party, and I can guarantee you'll be the talk of the town.
Cereal Killer
I'm a sucker for a good pun. You'll see that become a pattern on this list. But who doesn't love a good pun? And they make for cheeky (and hilarious) Halloween costumes.
For the serial killer costume you will need:
An oversized white t-shirt
Travell-sized cereal boxes (the ones you used to take camping growing up)
Red paint
Plastic knives
Hot glue
Scissors
In your t-shirt, cut holes haphazardly, giving the illusion of a torn-up, or battered piece of material.
Paint the shirt with red paint: add splatters, blotches, and other markings.
Hot glue the cereal boxes and knives to the shirt
Pair the shirt with black or blue jeans, and you're a full-blown cereal killer.
Identity Thief
This is once again a play on words, but probably one of the easiest to execute. Keep this in your back pocket for those moments where you get invited to a party the night of and have to scramble up a costume quickly.
For the identity thief costume, you will need:
A plain t-shirt
"Hello my name is" stickers (check these ones out on Amazon.)
A sharpie
A ski mask (optional)
Use your sharpie to add names to the stickers and adhere them to your shirt. Cover yourself from head to toe in strangers' names, or even your friend's. For extra effect, pair with a ski mask.
Anything dead
This is one of my go-to ideas because it is so customizable and you can get really creative with it. You can also cater it to a specific party or event. A couple of years back, I was attending a lot of festivals, and one of my best friends was DJing a Halloween show, so my group of friends went as "dead ravers."
I grabbed an oversized t-shirt, cut it up, painted "rave 2 grave" in big black letters on the back, and paired it with what I would typically wear to a music festival. I also had tons of fun with makeup and really went all out with dark shadows in my eyes, cheekbones, and on my neck. I even wore a prosthetic contact lens in one eye.
You can truly make this costume whatever you want it to be, and it's likely that you have most of the supplies lying around the house.

Friday night & Saturday morning
This one is a great idea for any couples or friend duos. Grab a buddy and pick a role. Whoever is dressing up as Friday night will get glamorous or suave, and whoever is dressing up as Saturday morning will get disheveled and messy.
The costume is best executed when you and your friend or partner dress in a similar or identical outfit, the only difference being how put together one person is versus the other. Saturday morning can opt for messy hair, ruined makeup, and disheveled clothing.
Once again, this costume is super customizable and you can make it happen with items you likely already have lying around in your closet.
Finish it off with a t-shirt or sign that labels each of you Friday night and Saturday morning and become the life (and aftermath) of the party.
Fake News
The last item on this list is yet another play on words and requires little more than a black t-shirt. Channel your inner Donald Trump and dress up as "fake news" by painting the word "fake" onto a t-shirt and pasting newspaper clippings to your pants and clothing.
For the fake news costume, you will need:
A plain black t-shirt
White paint
Paintbrushes
Newspaper clippings
